Types of Hangers for Clothing Stores: Wood, Metal, Plastic or Crystal

A guide to choosing hangers for a clothing store: which hanger suits each type of garment, wood, metal, plastic, crystal or velvet, how to choose the width and how to keep a consistent look.
The right hanger for a clothing store is chosen based on two things: what hangs on it and what look the store wants to convey. Jackets, suits and coats need a wide wooden hanger that holds the shoulder line. Tops and dresses hang beautifully on a slim metal hanger or a clear crystal hanger, which save space on the rail. Pants and skirts need clips or a bar, and children's clothing needs a 33 cm hanger. After that, choose one color and finish for the whole store. This guide goes through each of these decisions.
Start with the Garment
Jackets, suits and coats: a 44.5 cm wooden hanger with shoulders thick enough that the garment doesn't get a bump. For a full suit, a wooden hanger with clips holds the jacket on the shoulders and the pants in the clips.
Tops, shirts and dresses: a slim metal hanger with notches or a crystal hanger. They're slim, so more garments fit on the same rail.
Pants and skirts: a metal hanger with clips or a hanger with clamps, which hang the garment from the waist without a fold line. For a store with lots of skirts, a multi-clip hanger saves space.
Swimwear and lingerie: a metal body-shaped hanger that displays the item in the shape of a body, without a mannequin.
Children's and baby clothing: a 33 cm hanger for children and 26 cm for babies. An adult hanger stretches the neckline of a small garment.
Types of Hangers by Material
Wooden Hanger
Strong and classy. Solid wood holds the weight of a coat without bending, and its thick shoulders keep a jacket's shape. In fashion stores and boutiques, it conveys quality right from the rail. Our hangers are solid wood, 44.5 cm wide and 1.2 cm thick, with a swivel chrome hook, in white and black. The downside: it takes up more space on the rail.
Slim Metal Hanger
Thin metal wire in a gold, rose gold, black or silver finish. The slim profile saves space, and the metallic finish suits boutiques with a clean design. Ideal for tops, dresses and light knitwear, less so for heavy coats.
PVC-Coated Metal Hanger
PVC-coated metal wire, 40 cm wide. The coating keeps the garment from slipping and doesn't stain it. Common in dry cleaners, high-turnover stores and home closets, and available in several colors for coding by department.
Plastic Hanger
Light, inexpensive and durable. It's the practical choice for stores with a lot of merchandise and for children's clothing. The white plastic hanger with a swivel metal hook comes in three sizes, 26, 33 and 43 cm, so you can hang every department in the same style, from babies to adults.
Crystal Hanger
Clear or colored acrylic that looks like glass. It disappears behind the garment and keeps the focus on the item, so it suits boutiques, fitting rooms and displays. You'll find it clear, pink and smoke gray, with a pants bar.
Velvet Hanger
A slim velvet-covered hanger that garments don't slip off. It's popular in home closets and for garments with thin straps. It's less common in stores, because velvet collects dust and hair and wears out quickly when clothes come off and go back on the rail all day.
How to Choose the Width
The hanger should be slightly narrower than the garment's shoulder line. A hanger that's too wide creates a bump at the shoulder, and one that's too narrow makes the garment sag and slip.
40–44.5 cm: adults. 44.5 for jackets and coats, 40 to 43 for tops and dresses.
33 cm: children. Our children's hangers come in eight colors.
26 cm: babies.
The Small Details
Swivel hook: lets you hang the garment in any direction on the rail, so all garments face the same way.
Strap notches: hold dresses and tank tops with thin straps.
Bottom bar: for pants or a scarf. On a suit hanger, it saves a second hanger.
Clamps and clips: for garments hung from the waist. Check that they're padded, so they don't leave a mark on delicate fabric.
Consistency in the Store
Mixed hangers look like a stockroom. Choose one type and one color for each department, and hang all garments facing the same direction. In a small store, one type for the whole store looks neater. Keep a stock of hangers beyond the number of garments on the rails, because some leave with customers and others break over time.
Wholesale Hangers
We're direct importers of hangers for stores, chains, dry cleaners and studios. For bulk orders, we match the type, size and color to each department. All types are in the Hangers category. You can see them at our showroom in Tel Aviv, or contact us for a wholesale quote.
Frequently asked questions
Which hanger suits a clothing store?
It depends on the merchandise. For jackets and coats, a 44.5 cm wide wooden hanger; for shirts and dresses, a thin metal hanger or a crystal hanger; for pants and skirts, a hanger with clips; and for children's clothing, a 33 cm wide hanger. It is just as important to choose a uniform type and color for each department.
How much do hangers for a store cost?
The price depends on the material and the quantity. A plastic hanger is the cheap option, a thin metal hanger is in the middle, and a solid wood hanger and a crystal hanger cost more. The price per unit appears on the page of each hanger, and for bulk orders a wholesale price is given.
Wooden hangers or plastic hangers?
A wooden hanger is stronger, keeps the shape of the shoulders and conveys quality, so it suits boutiques and high fashion. A plastic hanger is light and inexpensive, and suits stores with a lot of stock and high turnover, and children's clothing.
Why are thin metal hangers popular in boutiques?
They save space on the rail, so more garments fit without being crushed. A gold, rose gold or black finish blends into a clean, modern design.
How do I hang pants on a hanger?
On a hanger with clamps or clips, hang from the waist, and the pants fall straight with no fold line. On a hanger with a bar, fold the pants along the crease and place them on the bar.
Which hanger suits a suit?
A wide wooden hanger, 44.5 cm wide, with thick shoulders that hold the shape of the jacket. A hanger with clips lets you hang the pants on the same hanger.
What is the width of a children's hanger?
33 cm for children's clothing and 26 cm for baby clothing. An adult hanger is too wide, and stretches the neck and shoulders of a small garment.
Are velvet hangers suitable for a store?
They are good for a closet at home, because the garment does not slip off them. In a store they are less practical: the velvet collects dust and hair and wears quickly when garments are taken off and put back all day.
Can I buy hangers wholesale?
Yes. You can buy per unit and also in quantities, and for stores, chains and laundries a wholesale price is given. Contact us by phone, WhatsApp or email with the type and the quantity.
How do you keep the shape of a jacket's shoulders?
Hang it on a wooden hanger of a width that matches the shoulders, not too wide and not too narrow. A thin metal hanger doesn't support a jacket's shoulder, and over time it gets a bump or a dent.
