Types of embroidery needles
Crewel needle: a sharp point and an elongated eye. For freestyle embroidery on linen and cotton, with stranded embroidery floss or fine wool yarn.
Blunt-tip needle (tapestry): passes between the threads of an evenweave fabric such as Aida without splitting them. For cross-stitch and needlepoint.
Chenille needle: a sharp point and a large eye, for thick threads and dense fabrics.
How to choose a size
With embroidery needles, as with hand-sewing needles, a higher number means a finer needle. Choose by the number of strands: for one or two strands, a fine needle such as 8 or 9; for six strands or wool yarn, a large needle such as 3 or 4.
Embroidery tips
Work with a thread about 40 cm long.
Stretch the fabric in an embroidery hoop so the stitches come out even.
Replace the needle when the point gets damaged. A damaged needle snags threads in the fabric.
