Product description

Appliqué scissors: cutting close to the seam without harming the layer beneath

PRYM appliqué scissors with a total length of 15 cm (6 in.), made of steel, with round metal handles in a rose gold tone. What sets them apart is the wide, rounded lower blade, which looks like a kind of "duckbill" on one side of the scissors.

The wide blade lies flat on the fabric and pushes the bottom layer away from the cutting blade. That way you can trim excess fabric in appliqué, patchwork and layers of fabric very close to the seam, without accidentally cutting the fabric beneath. This is a tool that someone who does appliqué or quilting uses all the time.

How this model differs from our similar models

  • PRYM appliqué 15 cm (the model on this page): A wide lower blade that protects the layer beneath

  • Small embroidery scissors: A narrow, pointed blade for cutting threads

  • Tailor's shears: A long blade for cutting the pattern itself

Common uses

  • Trimming excess fabric in appliqué

  • Grading layers in a seam

  • Quilting and patchwork

  • Cutting close to the seam in the top layer only

  • Working with felt and decorative fabrics

Who the scissors are for

  • Appliqué and quilting crafters: For cutting one layer without harming another

  • Seamstresses: For grading seam allowances

  • Patchwork classes: For quantity orders you can contact us

How to work with appliqué scissors

  • The wide blade down: Slide it between the layers so it lies on the fabric you need to keep

  • Glide along the seam: Bring the cutting blade close to the seam and cut in short strokes

  • Fabric only: Paper dulls the blade

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Holding them upside down: When the wide blade is on top, it doesn't protect the bottom layer

  • Cutting thick fabric in layers: The blade is short and meant for trimming and not for cutting the pattern

  • Storing without protection: Knocks on the tip damage the sharpness

Where appliqué scissors are used

The wide blade, which in English is also called a duckbill, is meant for any place where you cut one layer while the layer beneath it has to stay intact.

  • Hand and machine appliqué: Trimming excess fabric around the sewn shape, close to the seam

  • Reverse appliqué: Cutting open the top layer to expose the fabric beneath

  • Machine embroidery: Cutting the appliqué fabric inside the hoop, between embroidery steps

  • Quilting and patchwork: Cleaning up seam allowances in dense layers of fabric

The working rule: place the wide blade between the layers, beneath the fabric being cut, so it pushes the bottom layer away from the cutting blade.
