Kids' dress forms

Kids' dress forms are sewing dress forms built to a child's proportions, for sewing, measuring and fitting children's clothing without the child having to stand still while you work. In this category you'll find fixed-size dress forms by age and adjustable dress forms that grow with the child, with a pinnable cover and a height-adjustable stand. Ideal for dressmakers, children's fashion designers, students and stores – retail and wholesale, with delivery across Israel.

What is a kids' dress form, and how is it different from an adult form?

A kids' dress form is built on a child's body, not a scaled-down adult body. Children have a shorter torso, narrow shoulders and very little difference between chest, waist and hip measurements. Toddlers even have a slightly rounded tummy. That's why even an adult dress form adjusted to its smallest size won't give you the right proportions, and a garment sewn on it won't fit the child well.

A form in children's sizes lets you draft a pattern, check lengths, place buttons and zippers and measure hem length accurately – all without repeated fittings with a child who won't stand still.

Types of kids' dress forms

Fixed-size dress form

A form with a rigid core and fixed measurements that suit a specific age range. It gives you the most accurate silhouette, which makes it the choice of studios, children's clothing manufacturers and designers who work from a size chart. You can pin anywhere on the body, and anyone sewing several sizes usually keeps a few forms for different age groups.

Adjustable kids' dress form

A form with adjustment dials for the chest, waist and hips, and sometimes for back length and neck circumference as well. One form covers several sizes – for example an age range spanning a few years – and keeps fitting as the child grows. It's a great choice for home sewists and anyone who sews for children of different sizes.

Dress form or display mannequin

A dress form is made for work: sewing, pinning and measuring. To display clothing in a shop window or on a store shelf, it's better to choose kids' display mannequins, which are built to showcase a collection rather than for studio work.

How to choose a dress form for a child

Measure the child, not the age

Children of the same age can have very different measurements, so choose by measurements, not by age alone. Measure with a soft tape measure:

  • Chest: at the widest part, just under the armpits

  • Waist: at belly-button level, without pulling the tape

  • Hips: at the widest part of the pelvis

  • Back length: from the prominent vertebra at the nape of the neck down to the waistline

  • Shoulder width: from shoulder tip to shoulder tip across the back

For comparison, a form for ages 4 to 6 usually has a chest of about 57 cm and a waist of about 51 cm. Notice how small the difference is compared to an adult form.

Slightly smaller beats slightly larger

If the child's measurements fall between two sizes, choose the smaller form. You can add thin padding to a form that's too small to reach the exact size. A form that's too big can't be made smaller.

A cover that takes pins

Choose a form with a fabric cover and a core that accepts pins all over the body. That way you can secure fabric, mark pattern lines and work directly on the form. Complete your setup with sewing accessories such as pins, tailor's chalk and a pincushion.

Base and working height

A child's body is short, so it's important for the stand to be tall and adjustable, letting you work at a comfortable height without bending over. A tripod base with casters is easy to move around the studio, while a wooden base is stable and elegant and also suits a home sewing corner.

Who is a kids' dress form for?

  • Dressmakers and sewists: holiday and party dresses, Purim costumes, dance costumes and custom-made clothing

  • Children's fashion designers and manufacturers: pattern development, fit testing and quality control before production

  • Fashion students: working on a children's collection and course projects

  • Sewing workshops and alteration shops: adjusting lengths and making alterations without the child coming in for multiple fittings

Frequently asked questions

From what age are there children's dress forms?

Children's dress forms come in fixed sizes from toddler age up to elementary school age. Adjustable forms usually cover a range of several years, for example ages 6 to 10. For teenage girls and boys, the small sizes of women's dress forms or men's dress forms are usually suitable. It's best to choose by the child's measurements and not by age alone.

Which is better to choose: an adjustable children's dress form or a fixed-size form?

An adjustable form suits someone sewing for one growing child or for several children of different sizes, because one form covers several sizes. A fixed-size form gives a more accurate silhouette and is more comfortable for pinning. So it suits manufacturers, designers and studios that work from a size chart.

How do you measure a child to choose a suitable dress form?

Measure five measurements with a soft tape measure: chest circumference at the widest part under the armpits, waist circumference at navel height, hip circumference at the widest part, back length from the nape to the waistline and shoulder width. If the measurements fall between two sizes, choose the smaller form of the two and add thin padding as needed.

Can I sew children's clothes on an adult dress form at its smallest size?

Not recommended. A child's body is built differently: a shorter upper torso, narrow shoulders and a very small difference between the chest and the waist and hips. Even when an adult form is adjusted to its smallest size, it still keeps adult proportions, and a garment sewn on it will not fit the child properly. You can find more details in the guide to choosing a dress form.

Can I buy children's dress forms in bulk for a store, a sewing workshop or a fashion school?

Yes. HaBayit LaBubot (the House of Dress Forms and Display Mannequins) also operates as a wholesaler, supplying children's dress forms in quantities to manufacturers, studios, sewing workshops and educational institutions, with quantity pricing and size matching as needed. For children's clothing stores there are also kids' display mannequins, kids' hangers and professional display equipment. We deliver nationwide, and for a quote you can contact us.

What is the difference between a child's dress form and an adult form?

A child's body has different proportions: a relatively wide head and shoulders, an almost straight waist and no shaping. So a child's garment built on an adult form does not fit properly even if the circumferences are similar.

Which clothes can be sewn on a children's dress form?

Everyday clothes, holiday dresses, costumes for performances and dance, costumes and school clothes. The form helps check length, shoulder width and how the garment hangs.

What do you do when the child outgrows the form's size?

Choose a form in the small size and add thin padding in the areas that have grown. A dress form can be enlarged with padding, but it can't be made smaller.

Is a children's dress form suitable for performance costumes?

Yes. In dance and stage costumes, you fit the garment to the body without the child having to stand for a long time during fittings.

How do I take care of a dress form?

Cover it when you are not working on it, remove the pins at the end of the work, and clean light stains with a damp cloth and mild soap without soaking the body.
