Square Rulers

Metal L-shaped square rulers for pattern-making, pattern drafting and drawing: 15×30, 25×50 and 40.5×61 cm, with a 90-degree angle. For drawing perpendicular lines, squaring the edge of the fabric before cutting and checking corners.

What is a square ruler

A square ruler is an L-shaped ruler: two marked arms that meet at a right angle of 90 degrees. In pattern making it drafts the framework: the center line, waistline, bust line and hip line, all perpendicular to one another. In English it is called an L-Square or Tailor's Square.

Uses in sewing and pattern making

  • Drafting the framework of a basic block pattern.

  • Squaring the fabric edge perpendicular to the selvage before cutting.

  • Marking the lengthwise grain line on the pattern.

  • Checking the corners of pockets, collars and lapels.

  • Measuring and drafting straight lines.

How to choose a size

  • 15×30 cm: for details, corners and a home table.

  • 25×50 cm: for basic blocks of shirts, skirts and dresses.

  • 40.5×61 cm: for long lines, wide fabric and the cutting table. Also suitable for carpentry and home projects.

How to check that the angle is accurate

Place the ruler on a sheet of paper and draw a line along the arm. Flip the ruler over, align it with the same base line and draw again. If the two lines coincide, the angle is square.
