Product description
Metal Square Ruler for Pattern Making 25×50 cm
An L-shaped metal square ruler with a 50 cm long arm and a 25 cm short arm that meet at a 90-degree angle. The markings are in millimeters, with numbers every 10 mm and red numbers every 100 mm. The size suits basic blouse, skirt and dress patterns on a regular work table.
The square ruler is the tool that builds the framework of a pattern: center line, waist line, bust line and hip line, perpendicular to each other. In sewing it is also used to square the fabric edge at a right angle to the selvage before cutting, and to check that the corners of pockets, collars and rectangular pieces are straight.
Common Uses
Drawing the framework of a basic pattern: perpendicular lines at a right angle.
Squaring the fabric edge at a right angle to the selvage before cutting.
Marking the grainline on the pattern.
Checking the corners of pockets, collars and flaps.
Measuring and drawing long straight lines.
Who It Is For
Pattern makers, designers, fashion design students, seamstresses who build their own patterns, and fashion schools. For wholesale orders for a school, studio or shop: phone 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.
Professional Tips
Check the angle before you start: place the ruler on a sheet of paper, draw, flip it and draw again. If the two lines coincide, the angle is a true right angle.
Place the long arm against the main line of the pattern, and draw the perpendicular line along the short arm.
You can also use the ruler as a small weight to hold the pattern paper in place.
Common Mistakes
Building a right angle “by eye.” A small deviation at the corner turns into a deviation of centimeters at the end of the line.
Throwing the ruler or dropping it on the floor. A blow to the corner can open the angle.
Cutting with a knife along the ruler without a cutting mat.
How This Ruler Differs
This is the mid-size square ruler: 25×50 cm. The small one, 15×30 cm, suits details, and the large one, 40.5×61 cm, suits long lines and wide fabric. For most pattern-building work this is the most convenient size.
All square rulers are in Square Rulers. For drawing curves see Curve Rulers, and for cutting fabric with a rotary cutter see Cutting and Quilting Rulers.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
What are the ruler's dimensions?
A long arm of 50 cm and a short arm of 25 cm.
What is it made of?
Metal with a silver finish.
Is this size enough for a basic pattern?
In most cases, yes. A 50 cm arm covers most pattern lines of a shirt and a skirt. For longer lines, continue with a straight ruler.
How is the ruler marked?
In millimeters, with a number every 10 mm and a red number every 100 mm.
What is the difference between it and the 15×30 L-square?
It is almost twice as large on each arm. 15×30 is for details, and 25×50 is for full patterns.
Why do you need an L-square for pattern making?
To draw perpendicular lines: the center front line against the waist, bust and hip lines. A basic pattern is built on a frame of straight lines at 90 degree angles.
How do I square the edge of fabric with an L-square?
Place one arm along the fabric edge (the woven selvage) and draw along the other arm. The resulting line is perpendicular to the edge; cut along it.
Can I iron near a metal ruler?
Yes, metal does not warp from heat. Still, do not leave the ruler on the fabric while ironing, because it heats up.
How do I keep an L-square accurate?
Store it hanging or flat and do not drop it. A knock on the corner can open the angle.
Can I buy a quantity for a school or studio?
Yes. For wholesale orders for a school, studio or shop: call 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.
