Precise Marking: The Stage Between Cut and Cut
Before cutting and sewing, you need to transfer what appears on the cut paper on your own: seam lines, flashlights, matching marks, pocket placement and buttons. Marking tools do this quickly and accurately, and without guessing. In the sampling itself, they are also used to copy a cut from paper to paper, for example when making a cut to a different size or correcting an existing cut.
Marking roller with teeth
A tracing wheel is a tool with a gear at the end of a handle. It is rolled along the cut line, and the teeth leave a row of small dots on the paper underneath, or on the fabric with copy paper. A pulley with sharp teeth is especially suitable for copying cuts from paper to paper and working on cut cardboard, because the dots penetrate and look good. An ergonomic handle and curved arm help maintain a comfortable angle and work for a long time without tiring your hand.
How to work with a marking roller
- Place the cut on the paper or fabric, and fix it with weights for cutouts or pins so that they do not move.
- Straight lines are rolled along a ruler, and rounded lines along a curved bar.
- Press uniform pressure along the entire line, so that the dots come out clear and evenly spaced.
- When marking on canvas, copy paper is used in the color seen on the canvas, and first checked for residuals.
Common mistakes
- Working on a sensitive surface: Sharp teeth can scratch a table. Work on a cutting surface or on cardboard.
- Pressing too a delicate fabric: In thin fabrics, excessive pressure can damage the fibers. Start with light pressure.
- Marking without fixing the cut: A paper that moves in the middle of the line creates a double and inaccurate marking.
