Product description

Metal Square Ruler 61×40.5 cm for Drafting Patterns

An L-shaped metal square ruler with a 61 cm long arm and a 40.5 cm short arm that meet at a 90-degree angle. Each arm is 5 cm wide and 2 mm thick. The scale is marked in centimetres and millimetres, with red numbers every 10 cm.

The square ruler is the tool that builds the framework of a pattern: centre line, waist line, bust line and hip line, all perpendicular to one another. In sewing it is also used to square the fabric edge to the selvedge before cutting, and to check that the corners of pockets, collars and rectangular pieces are true.

Common uses

  • Drafting the framework of a basic pattern: perpendicular lines at a right angle.

  • Squaring the fabric edge to the selvedge before cutting.

  • Marking the lengthwise grain line on the pattern.

  • Checking the corners of pockets, collars and flaps.

  • Measuring and drawing long straight lines.

Who it is for

Pattern makers, fashion design students, sewists who draft their own patterns and fashion schools. For a wholesale order for a school, studio or shop: phone 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.

Professional tips

  • Check the angle before you start: place the ruler on a sheet of paper, draw along it, flip it over and draw again. If the two lines coincide, the angle is true.

  • Align the long arm with the main line of the pattern and draw the perpendicular line along the short arm.

  • The ruler also works as a small weight that holds the pattern paper in place.

Common mistakes

  • Drawing a right angle "by eye". A small error at the corner becomes an error of centimetres at the end of the line.

  • Throwing the ruler or dropping it on the floor. A knock on the corner can open up the angle.

  • Cutting with a knife along the ruler without a cutting mat.

How this ruler is different

This is the largest square ruler on the site: 61×40.5 cm, with a 5 cm wide arm. The pattern-making square rulers, 15×30 and 25×50 cm, are smaller and lighter and are convenient on a home table. Choose the large one for long lines, wide fabric and a cutting table.

All the square rulers are in Square Rulers. For drawing curves see Curve Rulers, and for cutting fabric with a rotary cutter see Cutting & Quilting Rulers.

Frequently asked questions

What are the dimensions of the ruler?

Long arm 61 cm, short arm 40.5 cm, arm width 5 cm and thickness 2 mm.

What is it made of?

Metal.

Why a large L-square?

A 61 cm arm draws a long line without moving the ruler, and squares the edge of wide fabric in one move.

Is it also suitable for carpentry and home projects?

Yes. This is the type of L-square that carpenters also use, and it is suitable for marking and checking right angles in wood, boards and cardboard.

What is the difference between this and the pattern-making L-squares?

It is the largest, with a 61 cm arm and a width of 5 cm. The 15×30 and 25×50 cm pattern-making squares are smaller and lighter.

Why do you need an L-square when making patterns?

To draw perpendicular lines: center front line against the waist line, bust line and hip line. A basic pattern is built on a frame of straight lines at a 90-degree angle.

How do you square a fabric edge with an L-square?

Place one arm along the fabric edge (the selvage) and draw along the other arm. The resulting line is perpendicular to the edge, and you cut along it.

Can you iron near a metal ruler?

Yes, metal does not warp from heat. Still, do not leave the ruler on the fabric while ironing, because it heats up.

How do you keep an L-square accurate?

Store it hanging or flat and do not drop it. A knock on the corner can throw the angle off.

Can I buy a quantity for a school or studio?

Yes. For a wholesale order for a school, studio or shop: phone 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.
