Product description

Metal Curve Ruler for Drafting Patterns

A metal curve ruler with a marking length of 61 cm, of the type called a Vary Form Curve. The curve changes gradually along the ruler: at one end it is sharp and rounded, and along the body it opens into a wide, almost straight arc. This way you can find, on the same ruler, a section that fits almost any curved line in a pattern.

The metal body is rigid and does not bend, and its edge gives a clean line for pencil, chalk and pen. The graduations along the arc are marked in centimeters, and you can read them also when measuring the length of the curved line itself.

Common uses

  • Drawing the hip line and side line in skirts and trousers.

  • Drawing a curved hemline.

  • Drawing sleeves, flaps and a curved waistline.

  • Measuring the length of a curved line in a pattern, for example to compare two seams that will be joined.

  • Smoothing lines after a size change.

Who it is for

Pattern makers, pattern graders, designers and fashion studios, and schools looking for a durable ruler for everyday work. For wholesale orders for a school, studio or shop: phone 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.

Professional tips

  • Draw first in pencil, and only after checking go over it in pen or chalk.

  • Mark in advance at least three points for each curve, and look on the ruler for the section that passes through all of them.

  • Write on the pattern the number on the ruler at the starting point. This way you draw the line in exactly the same place on the matching pattern or in another size.

  • Check that the lines meet at a right angle where seams join, for example at center back and the side line.

Common mistakes

  • Drawing curves freehand. The line does not repeat on the other side and in other sizes.

  • Using the sharpest section of the ruler for every line. Choose the section whose curve is close to the curve of the body.

  • Drawing a long line in one go. Draw in sections, and move the ruler along the line while the curve continues.

How this ruler differs

This is the metal curve ruler. The yellow curve ruler of the same length is made of plastic and is lighter, while the metal ruler is more rigid and its edge does not get damaged by use with pen and chalk.

All pattern curve rulers are at Curve Rulers. For straight lines and seam allowances see Cutting and Quilting Rulers, and for right angles Square Rulers. Before drafting, take measurements with a Measuring Tape.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the ruler?

The marking along the arc goes up to 61 cm.

What is the ruler made of?

Metal.

What is a Vary Form Curve?

A curve ruler whose curvature changes gradually along its length, from a sharp arc at one end to a wide arc along the body. Rotate and move it until a section of it matches the line you want to draw.

What is the advantage of a metal ruler over plastic?

It is rigid, does not bend, and its edge is not nicked by a pencil, chalk or a knife. A plastic ruler is lighter.

What is the difference between it and the yellow curve ruler?

The length is similar. This one is made of metal, while the yellow one is made of plastic, is lighter and has a hole for hanging.

Which lines is it suitable for?

For the hip line, side line, hem, sleeves, flaps and a rounded waistline.

What is the difference between a hip curve and a French curve?

A hip curve is long and bends gradually, for side, hip and hem lines. A French curve is shorter and more rounded, for the armhole and neckline.

How do I draw a rounded line with a curve ruler?

First mark the points the line must pass through, then move and rotate the ruler until a section of the curve passes through two or three of them at once, and draw.

Is the ruler also suitable for fitting alterations?

Yes. Use it to smooth a line after enlarging or reducing a pattern, so the new line continues the original curve.

Can I buy a quantity for a fashion school?

Yes. For a wholesale order for a school, studio or shop: phone 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.
