Product description

Clear Pattern Ruler with Curves and a Grip Handle

A clear pattern ruler measuring 43×19 cm with pink markings. One edge is straight and marked along its full length, and the other edge curves in a wide arc. In the center there is an open window in a curved shape, which serves both as a grip handle and as a template for a small, deep curve.

The ruler is printed with a grid of parallel lines, angle lines and guide marks for seam allowances. The transparency lets you see the pattern underneath, and the pink markings stand out on white pattern paper.

Common Uses

  • Drawing the neckline, armhole and sleeve cap.

  • Adding an even seam allowance along straight and curved lines.

  • Drawing side and hem lines with the curved edge.

  • Marking parallel lines and angles on the pattern.

  • Copying and correcting existing patterns.

Who It Is For

Fashion designers, pattern makers, students and seamstresses who want a single tool for straight lines, curves and seam allowances. For wholesale orders for a school, studio or shop: phone 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.

Professional Tips

  • Draw in pencil first, and only go over in pen or chalk after checking.

  • Mark at least three points for each curve in advance, and look for the section of the ruler that passes through all of them.

  • Write on the pattern the number on the ruler at the starting point. This lets you draw the line in exactly the same place on the matching pattern piece or in another size.

  • Check that the lines meet at a right angle where seams join, for example at center back and the side line.

Common Mistakes

  • Drawing curves freehand. The line does not repeat on the other side or in other sizes.

  • Using the sharpest section of the ruler for every line. Choose the section whose curve is close to the curve of the body.

  • Drawing a long line in one go. Draw in sections, and slide the ruler along the line as the curve continues.

How This Ruler Differs

This is the only clear ruler in the curve ruler group, and it has a grip handle and a grid of lines for seam allowances. The long curve rulers, in metal and in plastic, give one long arc, and the triangular ruler combines curves marked by body part.

All pattern curve rulers are in Curve Rulers. For straight lines and seam allowances see Cutting and Quilting Rulers, and for right angles see Square Rulers. Before drawing, take measurements with a measuring tape.

Frequently asked questions

What are the dimensions of the ruler?

43 cm long and 19 cm wide.

What is it made of?

Clear plastic, with pink marking.

What is the window in the center for?

It is a handle for a steady grip, and its curved edge is used for drawing small, deep curves, such as the armhole.

Can I add a seam allowance with it?

Yes. Place one of the parallel lines on the pattern line and draw along the edge of the ruler.

How is it different from a regular French curve?

It has a marked straight edge, a curved edge, a grid of lines and a handle. A regular French curve gives only a curve.

Is it clear?

Yes. You can see the pattern lines and the fabric through it.

What is the difference between a hip curve and a French curve?

A hip curve is long and bends gradually, for side, hip and hem lines. A French curve is shorter and more rounded, for the armhole and neckline.

How do I draw a rounded line with a curve ruler?

First mark the points the line must pass through, then move and rotate the ruler until a section of the curve passes through two or three of them at once, and draw.

Is the ruler also suitable for fitting alterations?

Yes. Use it to smooth a line after enlarging or reducing a pattern, so the new line continues the original curve.

Can I buy a quantity for a fashion school?

Yes. For a wholesale order for a school, studio or shop: phone 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.
