Product description

Disc pattern weight for balancing sampling and display mannequins

A round and flat pattern weight weighing 1230 grams, made of metal with a silver finish, without a handle. Its shape is a low and wide disc with a smooth top surface, and it is designed first and foremost for balance: it is placed on the base of a model mannequin or display mannequin to add weight to it and lower the center of gravity.

Anyone who works with a dress form is familiar with the moment when a heavy coat, an evening dress with a trail or a fabric that pulls to one side is put on it, and the mannequin begins to swing. Even in a shop window, when a mannequin is standing on one leg or on a light base, the extra weight at the base helps it stand more sturdy. A flat disc fits just that, because it sits low and does not protrude above the base.

On the cutting table, the same weight does a different job: thanks to its low profile, it holds a cut and fabric and is less likely to encounter the hand, scissors or ruler that passes by it.

Even when photographing clothes on a doll, when the garment is arranged repeatedly and pulled on each side, an extra weight at the base helps the doll stay in place and maintain the same angle between shots.

Common Uses

  • Stabilizing the base of a dress form: Adding weight to the base when working with heavy clothes and fabrics.

  • Stabilization of a display mannequin: Extra weight to the base of a mannequin in a store or display window.

  • Holding cuts: Fixing large cut parts on fabric, especially in areas where a high weight interferes with hand movement.

  • Fabric Layout: Holding the edge of a rolled fabric or fabric that tends to fold on the table.

  • Leatherwork: Holding a flat pattern on leather while marking.

Who is it suitable for

For seamstresses, models and tailors who work on a model doll and want extra stability, for clothing stores and shop window designers, and for a studio that photographs clothes on dolls and wants them to stand straight throughout the shoot. Those who work with large cuts will also benefit from it on the cutting table.

Pro Tips

  • Before placing the disc on the base of the doll, check that the surface of the base is flat and wide enough for the pattern weight to sit firmly on it.

  • Place the pattern weight close to the center of the base, around the post, rather than at the edge. A weight at the end can tilt the doll to the side.

  • If the fabric or garment pulls to one side, you can place the pattern weight slightly in the opposite direction.

  • On the cutting table, combine it with pattern weights with a handle: the disc for the areas adjacent to the cutting line, and the high pattern weights for the corners.

  • Since there is no handle, lift the disc with two fingers from the sides and do not slide it on a delicate cloth.

Common mistakes

  • Think that a pattern weight replaces a stable base. It adds weight, but a doll whose base is damaged or too small needs a suitable base.

  • Place the disc on a sloping or rounded base, from which it may slide.

  • Move the doll with the pattern weight still on the base. Lower it first, then move.

How is this model different from the other pattern weights in the series

This is the only pattern weight in the series that is explicitly designed for balancing the base of a modeling and display mannequin. It is a flat disc without a handle, weighing 1230 grams. The 700 gram round pattern weight is also without a handle, but lighter and in a higher proportion, and is mainly designed for cuts. The 1500 gram models with the handle, in the silver version and in the shell versions, are designed for the cutting table and leather work.
