Ballpoint Needles for Jersey and Knit Fabrics, Size 80/12
Home sewing machine needles with a ballpoint tip, designed for knit fabrics: jersey, interlock and fleece. The rounded tip pushes the loops of the knit fabric aside instead of piercing and tearing them. This prevents tiny holes along the seam, skipped stitches and runs that open up after washing. Each pack has 5 needles in size 80/12, with a gold-colored shank.
When you need a ballpoint needle
A knit fabric is built from loops of yarn, not from threads woven over and under each other like a woven fabric. A sharp or universal needle can cut a loop, and the loop opens up later. When a universal needle skips stitches on knit fabric, or tiny holes appear along the seam, it's time to switch to a ballpoint. For fabrics with a lot of elastane, such as swimwear and close-fitting sportswear, there are also stretch needles, suited to extra-stretchy fabrics.

Pro tips
On knit fabric use a narrow zigzag or the machine's stretch stitch, so the seam stretches with the fabric.
Don't pull the fabric while sewing. Let the machine feed it.
Polyester thread suits knit fabric better than cotton thread, because it is more flexible.
Common mistakes
Sewing jersey with an ordinary universal needle. It causes holes and skipped stitches.
A long straight stitch on stretch fabric. The seam breaks when the garment is stretched.
How to choose a size
80/12 suits most knit fabrics in light and medium weights, such as jersey. For thick knit fabrics, such as heavy fleece, you can move up to a thicker size.
