Product description

Comma-Shaped French Curve for Drawing Curved Lines

A transparent comma-shaped French curve, 29.9 cm long and 12.6 cm high, with pink centimeter markings along both edges. The rounded end has a sharp curve and five round holes of different sizes, and along the tail the curve gradually opens into a wide arc. The ruler is printed with COMMA SHAPED CURVE RULER.

This shape is exactly right for the short, deep lines of a pattern: the armhole, the neckline and the sleeve cap. The transparency lets you see the pattern lines underneath, and the graduations let you measure the length of the curved line itself, for example to compare the armhole with the sleeve cap.

Common Uses

  • Drawing the front and back armhole.

  • Drawing a round, deep neckline.

  • Drawing the sleeve cap and checking how it fits the armhole.

  • Drawing collars, flaps and rounded corners.

  • Marking small circles with the holes, for example for button placement or rounded corners.

Who It's For

Fashion design and pattern-making students, seamstresses who draft and alter patterns, pattern makers, and fashion schools. For wholesale orders for a school, studio or shop: phone 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.

Professional Tips

  • Draw in pencil first, and go over in pen or chalk only after checking.

  • Mark at least three points for each curve in advance, and look for the section of the ruler that passes through all of them.

  • Write on the pattern the number printed on the ruler at the starting point. That way you can draw the line in exactly the same place on the matching pattern or in another size.

  • Check that the lines meet at a right angle where seams join, for example at center back and the side line.

Common Mistakes

  • Drawing curves freehand. The line doesn't repeat itself on the other side or in other sizes.

  • Using the sharpest section of the ruler for every line. Choose the section whose curve is closest to the curve of the body.

  • Drawing a long line in one go. Draw in sections, and slide the ruler along the line as the curve continues.

How This Ruler Is Different

This is the short, rounded curve in the group, for deep lines: armhole, neckline and sleeve cap. The long 61 cm curve rulers, in metal and in plastic, suit long lines such as the hip line and hem. Pattern drafting usually calls for both types.

All pattern curve rulers are in Curve Rulers. For straight lines and seam allowances see Cutting and Quilting Rulers, and for right angles L-Squares. Before drawing, take measurements with a Measuring Tape.

Frequently asked questions

What are the curve's dimensions?

29.9 cm long and 12.6 cm high.

What is it made of?

Clear plastic with pink markings.

Which lines is a French curve suited for?

For short, deep lines: armhole, neckline, sleeve cap and collars.

What are the round holes for?

For drawing small circles in various sizes, for example to mark button positions or to round corners.

Can it be used to measure the length of a curved line?

Yes. The graduations along the edge let you measure a curved line, for example to compare the armhole with the sleeve cap.

What is the difference between it and a long curve ruler?

The French curve is short and rounded, for deep lines. A long curve ruler, such as 61 cm, suits the hip line and hem.

What is the difference between a hip curve and a French curve?

A hip curve is long and curves gradually, for side, hip and hem lines. A French curve is shorter and more rounded, for the armhole and neckline.

How do I draw a curved line with a curve ruler?

First mark the points the line needs to pass through, then move and rotate the ruler until a section of its curve passes through two or three of them at once, and draw.

Is the ruler also suitable for fitting alterations?

Yes. Use it to smooth a line after enlarging or reducing a pattern, so the new line continues the original curve.

Can I buy a quantity for a fashion school?

Yes. For wholesale orders for a school, studio or shop: call 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.
