Product description
Dumbbell for 700 grams, light and handleless
A round dumbbell weighing 700 grams, made of metal with a silver finish, with a smooth top surface and an even side. It has no handle, and it sits low on the cut. This is the lightest model in the series, and for a lot of jobs it's exactly what you need: small parts like a collar, cuff, pocket, tab or shoulder strap don't need a 1.5-pound weight, but you do need something to hold them flat while slicing.
Light fabrics, such as thin cotton, viscose, chiffon and belly, move with every movement of the hand. Pins in such cases tend to create wrinkles and pull the fabric out of line. A few light weights scattered around the part hold it in several points at the same time, without puncture and without deforming.
In a small part, a heavy weight is usually more than necessary, and moving a kilo and a half repeatedly around curves tires the hand. A 700-gram dumbbell is easy to lift and spread, and you can place three or four of them on one part and leave the lines visible. Therefore, in the studio, it is customary to hold several light weights to one or two heavy sides, and choose according to the size of the part and the weight of the fabric.
Common Uses
- Small cut parts: collars, cufflinks, pockets, tabs and trim stripes.
- Lightweight fabrics: thin cotton, viscose, lining and chiffon, in which a pin wrinkles the fabric.
- Roller work: Holding small parts on a cutting surface while cutting with a round knife.
- Paper Cutouts: Holding cutout paper or copy paper while moving lines.
- Combination with heavy weights: Completion of grip points in large sections, between the heavy weights.
Who is it suitable for
For seamstresses at home and in the studio, for models and tailors who cut many small parts, for workshops and sewing schools that equip several work stations, and for those who take the first steps in cutting without pins. The recommendation is to have a few units alongside the rest of the sewing equipment.
Pro Tips
- Work with several dumbbells at the same time: one in each corner of the part, and another on a curved line.
- With a light fabric, place the dumbbells very close to the shear line. Thin fabric rises easily from the edges.
- Since there is no handle, lift the weight with two fingers from the sides, without dragging it on the fabric.
- In a large part or in a thick fabric, combine it with a heavy dumbbell with a handle in the corners and edges.
- Keep the dumbbells together in a tray or box, so they're all available when you slice a cut.
- In a fabric that folds or rolls from the edges, such as a thin trico, place a dumbbell on the edges of the fabric itself, and only then the cut and the rest of the weights.
Common mistakes
- Rely on one 700g dumbbell in a long section or in a thick fabric. Here you need several units or a heavier dumbbell.
- Place dumbbells in the center of the part and leave the corners free.
- Cut out the part and remove weights before slots and markings have been moved.
How is this model different from the other dumbbells in the series
This is the lightest dumbbell in the series, 700 grams, without a handle. The 1230 gram disc is also without a handle, but it is heavier, flatter and wider, and is also designed to stabilize the base of a model mannequin. The 1500 gram models with a grip, in a full silver version and in the versions with an orange, reddish-brown or dark shell, are suitable for large parts, thick fabrics and leather work.
