Product description

ORGAN Universal Needles, Size 80/12

Home sewing machine needles by ORGAN, a Japanese needle maker from the city of Ueda in Nagano Prefecture. The needles use the 130/705H system with a universal point that is slightly rounded and suits most woven fabrics. Each pack contains 5 needles in size 80/12, the most common size, suitable for most projects.

Needle System: Will It Fit Your Machine?

The 130/705H system, also called HAx1 or 15x1, is the system used by most home sewing machines: Singer, Brother, Janome, Bernina, Pfaff, Toyota, home Juki and more. The needle shank has a flat side that faces the back on most machines, so the needle cannot be inserted the wrong way round. Industrial machines use other systems, such as DBx1, so these needles do not fit them. Home overlockers and coverstitch machines sometimes use a special version of the system, so check your machine manual.

Common Uses

  • Sewing cotton, poplin, viscose and crepe.

  • Blouses, dresses and skirts in light and medium-weight fabrics.

  • Bedding, pillowcases and home repairs.

  • Everyday sewing on a home machine.

Who It Is For

Home sewists and beginners, sewing teachers, schools and classes, and alteration seamstresses. For wholesale orders: phone 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.

Professional Tips

  • Sew a few centimeters on a scrap of the same fabric before you start, and check the seam on both sides.

  • Match the thread to the needle: the thread should pass freely through the eye and the groove along the needle.

  • Return used needles to a separate compartment in the pack, and do not mix them with new ones.

Common Mistakes

  • Sewing with the same needle for many months. A dull needle pulls threads and skips stitches.

  • Using a universal needle on thin, stretchy knit fabric. A ballpoint needle is the right choice for such fabrics.

  • Sewing over pins. The needle hits the pin and breaks or bends.

How to Choose a Size

The first number is the needle thickness in hundredths of a millimeter, and the second is the American number. The higher the number, the thicker the needle and the heavier the fabric it suits:

  • 70/10: Fine fabrics: chiffon, organza, silk, lining and fine cotton.

  • 80/12: Light and medium fabrics: cotton, poplin, viscose, crepe and bedding. The range for most projects.

  • 90/14: Medium and heavy fabrics: linen, gabardine, light wool, corduroy and curtain fabrics.

  • 100/16: Heavy fabrics: denim, canvas, upholstery fabrics, coats and thick layers.

All ORGAN sizes, and needles for knit fabrics, can be found in Home Sewing Machine Needles. A full needle selection guide is available in Needles.

Frequently asked questions

What is the size of the needles?

80/12: 0.80 mm thick. The size for most everyday jobs.

Which fabrics is an 80/12 needle suitable for?

For cotton, poplin, viscose, crepe, bed linen and most light and medium fabrics.

Which needle should I buy for a new machine?

An 80/12 universal needle suits most work. It is also worth keeping 90/14 for thick fabrics and 70/10 for thin fabrics.

What is the difference between 80/12 and 90/14?

80/12 is finer and suits light and medium fabrics. 90/14 suits linen, gabardine and wool.

Is an 80/12 needle suitable for jersey?

For thick jersey, sometimes yes. For thin, stretchy jersey, a needle with a ballpoint tip is better.

Which machines are the needles suitable for?

Most home sewing machines that work with the 130/705H system (HAx1 or 15x1): Singer, Brother, Janome, Bernina, Pfaff, Toyota and more. They are not suitable for industrial machines.

How many needles are in the pack?

5 needles in the pack.

How often should I change a sewing machine needle?

At the start of every project, whenever you switch to a different type of fabric, and right after the needle has hit a pin, zipper or button. A click with every stitch, skipped stitches or breaking thread are signs that the needle is dull.

How do I insert a needle into a home machine?

Lower the presser foot, raise the needle to its highest point and loosen the clamp screw. Insert the needle all the way up, with the flat side of the shank facing back in most machines, and tighten the screw.

Can I buy a quantity for a business or a school?

Yes. For a wholesale order: phone 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.
