Why a wedding dress needs a gusseted cover
A regular cover is two sheets sewn together, so it is flat. A dress with a full skirt, layers of tulle, lace or beading gets pressed between the two sides: the skirt is crushed, the embellishments rub against the fabric and the train folds along the dress. In a cover with a side gusset, the front and back are joined by a strip of fabric of fixed width, and the cover becomes a three-dimensional hanging compartment in which the dress hangs in its natural shape. Models in this category
Wedding dress cover with 25 cm gusset, 60×180 cm: white non-woven with black trim, full front zipper and a clear window. For ball-gown dresses and dresses with a soft petticoat.
Bridal and evening dress cover with gusset, white non-woven: 70 cm wide, 180 cm high and with a 25 cm gusset. The extra ten centimeters of width make a difference with wide shoulders, puffed sleeves and embellishments on the bodice.
Long black cover with 8 cm gusset and ID window: black non-woven that blocks light, with a carry handle and two metal loops at the bottom for folding the cover. For fitted or A-line evening dresses.
Grey cover with 8 cm gusset and ID window: 60×180 cm in a neutral shade, with a small window that keeps most of the dress protected from light, and also with a handle and loops at the bottom.
Which depth suits which dress
8 cm gusset: fitted evening dress, A-line dress with medium volume, dress with sequins or stones, and a dress with a bolero on two hangers.
25 cm gusset: ball-gown wedding dress, skirt with several layers of tulle, soft petticoat, bat mitzvah dress or full prom dress.
70 cm width: dress with wide shoulders, puffed sleeves or heavy embellishments on the bodice.
Flat cover: enough for a simple, light evening dress. You will find these in Non-Woven Garment Covers.
The 180 cm length and the train
All covers in this category are 180 cm high, and a full-length dress hanging on a hanger fits inside. In the 8 cm gusset covers, a garment length of up to about 175 cm including the hanger is recommended. A longer train is folded once into the bottom of the cover, and in a 25 cm gusset cover you can lay it inside the depth instead of folding it along the dress.
Caring for a wedding dress before and after the wedding
In the weeks before the wedding
Hang the dress on a wide, sturdy hanger and transfer the weight to the inner hanging loops at the waist rather than to thin straps.
Hang it in a closet in an inner room, away from direct sunlight, heat and humidity. A storeroom, an enclosed balcony or a bathroom is no place for the dress.
On the way to the venue or the photo shoot, carry the cover so the hem does not touch the floor. In covers with a handle and loops at the bottom, you can fold the lower part upward.
After the wedding
Clean the dress before long-term storage. Makeup, sweat and drink stains that are invisible today can yellow over time.
Take the dress out of the dry cleaner's plastic bag and move it into a breathable non-woven cover.
Place white, acid-free tissue paper between the folds of the train and the layers.
Store a crinoline with rigid hoops separately from the dress.
An especially heavy dress with full beading can also be stored flat in an acid-free box for years, so its weight does not pull on the shoulders.
Open the cover every few months and check the fabric.
Evening dresses: black, white or grey
A black cover blocks light, which matters for strongly colored dresses that can fade when hung facing a window. It also hides the dress from passers-by. A white cover is the traditional choice for wedding dresses and gives a clean look at handover. Grey is a neutral middle ground for the closet and the salon stockroom.
For bridal salons, designers and rental shops
In a bridal salon, every dress that goes out to a customer must arrive clean and without creases, and a uniform, elegant cover is part of the handover moment. In rental shops, the ID window and a card with the customer's name and return date save opening covers. HaBayit LaBubot sells every model by the unit and in quantity, directly from import, and non-woven covers can be ordered with logo printing from 30 units. Frequently asked questions
What gusset depth does a full wedding dress need?
A ball-gown wedding dress or a skirt with several layers of tulle needs a cover with a 25 cm gusset. A fitted dress, an A-line with medium volume and an embellished evening dress are fine with an 8 cm gusset. If the dress also has wide shoulders or puffed sleeves, choose the 70 cm wide cover.
What do I do with a long train inside the cover?
Fold the train gently once into the bottom of the cover. In a cover with a 25 cm gusset you can lay it inside the depth instead of folding it along the dress. To avoid a sharp crease, add white, acid-free tissue paper between the folds.
Can a wedding dress be stored in a cover for years?
Yes, provided the dress was cleaned before storage and the cover is made of a breathable fabric such as non-woven, not sealed plastic. Hang it in a dry, shaded closet and open the cover every few months to check it. An especially heavy dress with full beading can also be stored long-term flat in an acid-free box, so its weight does not pull on the shoulders.
Does a crinoline fit in a gusseted cover?
A 25 cm gusset suits soft skirts, layers of tulle and a soft petticoat. A wide crinoline with rigid hoops is best stored separately from the dress. The gusset is a flexible fabric panel, not a rigid frame, and the cover takes its shape from the dress inside it.
Black or white cover for an evening dress?
A black cover blocks light and suits strongly colored dresses, long-term storage and discreet handover, like the black cover with 8 cm gusset. A white cover gives a clean, traditional look for wedding dresses and handover at the salon. Grey is neutral and suits the closet and the stockroom.
