Prym safety pin, 23 mm long
A small steel safety pin, 23 mm long. Slightly longer than size 3/0, so it also holds two layers of thin or medium fabric, yet it is still delicate enough for light garments. The pins come in a Prym box of 1000 pieces, and are sold individually or as a full box.
A safety pin is made of a single piece of wire: an arm with a point, a spring bobbin, and a cap in which the point locks. On Prym pins the cap has no sharp edges, the point is polished and the spring is balanced, so the pin closes easily and stays closed.

Professional tips
To close a gap in a shirt, insert the pin from the inside, between the buttons, with the cap facing down.
When threading elastic, close the pin before putting it into the casing, and advance with short gathers.
On thin synthetic fabric, insert the pin along the thread direction so the hole closes after it is removed.
Common mistakes
Forcing it open sideways. The spring warps and the point no longer locks into the cap.
Using a small pin for wide elastic. It spins inside the casing and gets stuck.
