Product description

Triangular pattern-making ruler

A triangle-shaped pattern-making ruler, 49 cm long. One tool has a straight edge marked in centimeters and three inner curves marked in English: CURVE OF FRONT for the front line, CURVE OF BACK for the back line and CURVE OF CHILDREN for children's patterns. The long outer edge curves gradually and is marked PART OF LATERAL HIPS – BLOUSES, for the side line of blouses and the hip line.

Instead of switching between a straight ruler, a French curve and a hip curve, you draw straight lines and curves with a single tool. It is the basic tool for drafting a basic pattern, copying a pattern and making fit corrections.

Common uses

  • Drafting a base pattern for a blouse, dress, skirt and trousers.

  • Drawing the neckline and armhole with the front curve and the back curve.

  • Drawing the side line and hip line along the curved edge.

  • Drafting children's patterns with the dedicated curve.

  • Smoothing lines after enlarging, reducing or changing a pattern.

Who it is for

Fashion design and pattern-making students, pattern makers, designers and seamstresses who draft their own patterns. For a wholesale order for a school, studio or shop: phone 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.

Professional tips

  • Draw in pencil first, and only after checking go over it in pen or chalk.

  • Mark at least three points for each curve in advance, and look for the section of the ruler that passes through all of them.

  • Write on the pattern the number on the ruler at the starting point. That way you draw the line in exactly the same place on the matching pattern or in another size.

  • Check that lines meet at a right angle where seams meet, for example at the center back and the side line.

Common mistakes

  • Drawing curves freehand. The line does not repeat on the other side and in other sizes.

  • Using the sharpest section of the ruler for every line. Choose the section whose curve is close to the curve of the body.

  • Drawing a long line in one go. Draw in sections, and move the ruler along the line as the curve continues.

How this ruler differs

This is a combined ruler: a straight edge and three curves in one tool, with a marking of which curve suits which line. Regular curve rulers, such as the hip curve and the metal curve, give one long curve for side and hem lines, and complement it.

All pattern curve rulers are in curve rulers. For straight lines and seam allowances see cutting and quilting rulers, and for right angles square rulers. Before drawing, take measurements with a measuring tape.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the ruler?

The marking on the straight edge goes up to 49 cm.

What do the inscriptions on the ruler mean?

CURVE OF FRONT is the curve for the front line, CURVE OF BACK for the back line, CURVE OF CHILDREN for children's patterns, and PART OF LATERAL HIPS – BLOUSES is the section of the edge for the side line and hip.

What is the ruler made of?

Plastic.

Does the ruler replace a French curve and a hip curve?

For most jobs, yes: it has curves for the neckline and armhole, and a curved edge for the side line. For very long hem lines, it is convenient to add a long hip curve.

Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes. The inscriptions on the ruler show which curve fits which line, which makes it easier for anyone drafting a first pattern.

What is the difference between a hip curve and a French curve?

A hip curve is long and bends gradually, for side, hip and hem lines. A French curve is shorter and more rounded, for the armhole and neckline.

How do I draw a rounded line with a curve ruler?

First mark the points the line must pass through, then move and rotate the ruler until a section of the curve passes through two or three of them at once, and draw.

Is the ruler also suitable for fitting alterations?

Yes. Use it to smooth a line after enlarging or reducing a pattern, so the new line continues the original curve.

Can I buy a quantity for a fashion school?

Yes. For a wholesale order for a school, studio or shop: phone 03-9444226 or WhatsApp 055-2473993.
