Sewing notions by stage of work
A professional studio doesn't need lots of tools – it needs the right tool for each stage. The sewing notions in this category are organized by what happens on the worktable: pinning, sewing, cutting, drafting, gluing and pressing. Each stage also has its own dedicated subcategory with the full range.
Pinning: sewing pins and safety pins
Pearl-head pins: on a pin wheel or in a clear storage box with a lid, in white, black, dark shades, bright colors and pastels. The large head is easy to see and pull out when working on a dress form; colored pins are used for marking during fitting, and black ones suit dark fabrics.
Faceted-head pins: on a wheel, in white, black, black-and-white and colors – for pinning bridal veils, headscarves and shawls, bouquets and costumes.
Steel sewing pins: Prym pins in size 34×0.60 mm, in an octagonal 25 g box or in hardened steel in a 500 g pack, Prym soft-steel pins in size 26×0.65 mm in a 500 g pack, and nickel-plated flat-head pins in a round box with a sponge for pinning.
Safety pins: Prym steel safety pins in lengths from 19 to 57 mm (sizes 3/0 to 4), silver pins in sizes 0 to 4 and gold-tone pins – for tagging, threading elastic and holding layers. The full range is in Pins.

Needles for home sewing machines: system 130/705H, in sizes 60/8 to 100/16, and ballpoint needles in sizes 80/12 and 90/14 for knit fabrics.

How to choose sewing notions by fabric type
Machine needle by fabric weight
Lightweight fabrics (chiffon, silk, organza, linings): needles in size 60/8 to 70/10.
Medium-weight fabrics (cotton, poplin, viscose): size 80/12.
Medium-to-heavy fabrics (linen, gabardine, light wool, corduroy): size 90/14.
Heavy fabrics (denim, canvas, upholstery, coats): size 100/16.
Knit fabrics (tricot, jersey, interlock, French terry): a ballpoint needle, which prevents holes and skipped stitches.
Pins by fabric type
On delicate fabrics, place pins within the seam allowance rather than in the body of the garment, so no hole is left in a visible spot. In leather and coated fabrics every hole remains, so pin only within the seam allowance, or secure in advance with a textile glue suitable for fabrics and leather. Throw away a pin that has bent or whose point has gone dull, because it tears fibers and leaves a mark even in sturdy fabric. When pressing, don't place the iron directly on the pin heads.
Sewing notions for working on a dress form
Pin at an angle: a pin that enters the body of the form at an angle holds the fabric and doesn't pull out when you move it.
Mark with color: colored pearl-head pins mark measurement points, the waistline and center front on the fabric, and they're easy to spot even in a fitting photo.
Start from the right measurements: before pinning fabric, measure bust, waist and hips and adjust the form. How to measure is explained in the guide to body measurements for sewing, and how to choose the form itself is explained in the guide to choosing a dress form.

Frequently asked questions
Which pins are suitable for working on a dress form?
For working on a dress form, pearl-head pins are handy, since their large heads are easy to see and pull out, as are straight hardened-steel dressmaker pins such as Prym 34×0.60 mm, whose fine point passes through the fabric without damaging the fibers. Insert them diagonally so the pin holds the fabric and doesn't slip out when you move it.
What is the difference between pearl-head pins and steel sewing pins?
Pearl-head pins have a large, round colored head that is easy to see on fabric and on the dress form, making them ideal for marking during fittings. Straight steel pins are thinner, with a small or flat head, and are convenient for pinning patterns to fabric and sewing along the seam allowance. Most studios keep both types on hand.
Which safety pins are suitable for threading elastic?
For wide elastic and thick fabrics, long safety pins work well, such as Prym 50 mm (size 3) and 57 mm (size 4). For narrow elastic and layers, use 27 mm (size 0) and 38 mm (size 2) pins. The short pins, 19 and 23 mm, are mainly used for tagging and for thin fabrics.
Which machine needle suits which fabric?
For fine fabrics such as chiffon, silk and organza, needles in sizes 60/8 to 70/10 are suitable; for cotton and viscose, size 80/12; for linen and gabardine, size 90/14; and for denim and canvas, size 100/16. For knits such as jersey, choose a ballpoint needle, which prevents holes and skipped stitches.
What can you do when a needle is hard to thread?
You can use a needle threader: the Prym LED threader lets you thread even in dim light, and an automatic threader threads hand needles 0.5 to 0.9 mm thick at the press of a button. Another option is self-threading needles, where you lay the thread on a slot at the top of the needle and pull.
Which sewing accessories belong in a basic kit for beginners and fashion students?
A basic kit includes sewing pins and a pin cushion, tailor's shears and small scissors or a thread snip, a pack of machine needles in mixed sizes and hand needles, an L-square and a curve ruler for pattern drafting, and a pressing ham for corners and curved seams. You can add textile glue for quick repairs.
Can fabric be joined without sewing?
Yes, for repairs, hems and patches. Gütermann HT2 textile glue bonds fabrics and leather, stays flexible and is washable up to 40°C. Iron-on bonding powder is sprinkled on the fabric, pressed through baking paper and left to cool. For joins that take stretch and strain, a seam is still better.
How do you secure fabric or pattern paper to the table without pins?
With a temporary fabric adhesive spray, which holds the fabric to the cutting table or to the pattern paper and lets you lift and reposition it. Spray from about 30 cm away in a thin layer. It is especially useful with slippery fabrics that shift while cutting.
Which pressing cushion is suitable for sleeves?
For a whole sleeve and trouser legs, a long sleeve board on a 56 cm wooden stand lets you press without a crease line. For cuffs, shoulders and children's clothes, a compact 28 cm sleeve board is handy, and for the sleeve cap a mushroom pressing cushion on a wooden post is the right choice.
