Why you need a curve ruler
The human body is made of curves, and so is the pattern: neckline, armhole, sleeve cap, waistline, hip line and hem. A curve drawn freehand does not come out identical on both sides and does not repeat itself in the next size. A curve ruler gives a smooth line and lets you draw the same curve again and again.
Types of curve rulers
Triangular pattern-drafting ruler (Pattern Master): a straight edge and several curves in one tool. On the ruler the curves are labeled by body part: front, back and children's patterns.
Long curve ruler (Vary Form Curve): an arc that opens gradually along 61 cm. For the hip line, side line, hem and sleeves. Available in metal and in plastic.
French curve and pattern ruler with curves: short, deep curves, for the neckline and armhole. The clear ruler also has a straight edge, a grid of lines for seam allowances, and a handle.
Hip curve or French curve
A hip curve is long and bends gradually, for long lines such as the side of a skirt and trousers. A French curve is short and rounded, for short, deep lines such as the armhole and neckline. In pattern drafting you use both.
Metal or plastic
A metal ruler is rigid, does not bend, and its edge is not nicked by chalk, a pencil or a knife. A plastic ruler is lighter, convenient for students, and sometimes clear, so you can see the pattern through it.
How to draw a curve
First mark at least three points that the line must pass through.
Move and rotate the ruler until one section of it passes through the points.
Note the number on the ruler at the starting point, so you can repeat the line on the other side and in other sizes.
Check that the lines meet at a right angle where the seams join.

What is the difference between a hip curve and a French curve?
The long hip curve is for long lines such as the side seam and hip line. The short, rounded French curve is for the armhole and neckline.
What is a Vary Form Curve?
A long curve ruler whose curvature changes gradually along its length, from a sharp curve to a wide one. Rotate it until a section of it matches the line.
Metal or plastic curve ruler?
Metal is rigid and durable for everyday work. Plastic is lighter and sometimes transparent.
How long are curve rulers?
The long curve rulers are marked up to 61 cm, and the triangular ruler up to 49 cm.
How do you draw a curve with a curve ruler?
Mark at least three points, move the ruler until a section of it passes through them, and draw.
How do you draw the same curve on both sides?
Write on the pattern the number on the ruler at the starting point, and place the ruler at the same point on the other side.
